The MICAH Education Committee has a long history of advocacy for the children who attend our public schools. MICAH helped to promote a certification program for second-career minority professionals who wish to be teachers; MICAH fought for a fair share of SAGE schools to reduce class sizes in Milwaukee Public Schools, and it served as a watchdog in the Neighborhood Schools Initiative process.

Now, MICAH, along with our partners in WISDOM, is working to tackle the biggest issue: school funding. Simply, the combination of state spending caps and rising costs for insurance, Special Education and more have begun to strangle our schools. This is true in Milwaukee and around the state. MICAH's Education Committee is determined to fight until our children's education is recognized as a top priority for our entire state.

Locally, MICAH is working to reduce "student mobility" in Milwaukee Public Schools. Many children, mostly from low-income families, have frequent address changes. MICAH wants to be sure that those children do not need to change schools every time they move.

MICAH Education Committee--2004

MICAH is committed to strive for quality public education in the city of Milwaukee that works to ensure the future of each child. MICAH’s passion for quality public schools have led to an increase in the number of teachers of color, smaller class sizes in grades kindergarten through third, and enhanced parental rights.

Recently, MICAH has successfully led the charge for Milwaukee Public Schools to address student mobility, which is an occurrence of students moving from school to school as they experience address changes. Through our efforts, MPS developed a plan to address student mobility by identifying and training mobility coordinators at each school, partnering with stakeholders to hold community forums on the issue, and developing information, in both English and Spanish, for parents on their rights regarding the issue

MICAH continues to develop the Milwaukee Education Alliance, which is a strategy to empower parents and neighborhoods by partnering MICAH churches with their schools in their neighborhood. Since 2002, MICAH has worked with both Siefert and Hopkins St. Schools to train parents and teachers on the art of relationship building. MICAH will continue to train parents and school staff on power organizing methods and will work with that school community to address issues local to that community.

The MICAH Education committee commits to work to empower people in our congregations and communities to strive for justice in all of our schools. Clearly, the lack of funds for our public schools in the state of Wisconsin is unjust! As a member of WISDOM, MICAH is working with to build power on a statewide level that will continue to push the State of Wisconsin to invest in the children who need a quality education..

We encourage you to join the fight and to do what is just for the children in Milwaukee.
