The MICAH Immigration Committee held several events to
inform recent immigrants of their rights and responsibilities
under the law. The largest of these was "Law Day," attended
by more than 200 people. Several other trainings and community
meetings engaged hundreds more people in this effort for justice.
The Committee's members have also met with public officials,
as well as non-immigrant groups, to call attention to the
need for reform in the draconian immigration law of 1996 and
to let people know the human stories that underlie the rhetoric.
Current systems cause immigrants to be among the most exploited
members of our society, often denied even basic human rights.
The Committee has set its sights on working for a new amnesty
law in the U.S., so that immigrant families can be reunited
and can live free of fear.
